Climbing Rumiñahui 4712m:
Early in the morning, we begin to climb the volcano. Crossing vast “páramos” and surrounded by the cold breath of the Andes, you will be amazed by the majestic atmosphere and beauty of the landscape that joins the valleys, mountains and neighboring volcanoes in one single image. We will reach the peaks of Rumiñahui where it is possible to observe the surrounding valleys. On a cloudless day, we will even have the opportunity to admire in the distance the Ilinizas and Chimborazo, the highest snow-capped mountain of Ecuador.
Cotopaxi National Park:
The first stop at the Cotopaxi National Park is the interpretation center where we will learn more about the local flora and fauna and the geologic formations in the area. Hand in hand with the beauty of nature, we will climb up to Cotopaxi’s high mountain refuge where we will rest for a while and then go down to Limpiopungo and its lake where a delicious snack will be served. Then we will visit Pucara de Salitre, a strategic military fortress from the old Inca Empire that monitored the “incañanes”, or roads that led to the eastern jungles and the Latacunga valley. The day ends at Hacienda El Porvenir.
Climbing Pasochoa 4200m:
Our hike will begun in Hacienda Santa Rita Private Reserve, at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,824 ft), from which we will begin climbing Pasochoa Volcano. The route crosses patches of native Andean forest and open “páramos” or Highlands. We will trek through fields covered with high grass and will enjoy the magnificent view of the neighboring mountains covered with snow. This beautiful experience doesn’t require any mountaineering experience.
This is perfect trekking for acclimatization.
Climbing Cotopaxi 5897m:
Our climbing begins shortly after with a 45-minute hike up to the climber’s refuge (15.744) where we rest and have a substantial lunch. After lunch we hike up to the glaciers to practice some basic ice climbing techniques. We rest for the rest of the day until midnight when we begin our climb to the summit. We reach the summit just as the sun is rising and take advantage of the early morning light to take some nice photographs of ourselves at the summit. The descent takes two hours and afterwards we return by car to the hacienda and then to Quito.
